Journalists and photographers have put their bodies on the line through scorching heat and thunderstorms to tell your story.

Advertising reps have hit the pavement to ensure customer satisfaction.

And then there is the staff you rarely see that work just as hard to ensure the newspaper makes deadline and the website keeps ticking over.

We are used to copping abuse from strangers, from having a door slammed in our face, to crying with a person we are interviewing to witnessing great sporting milestones.

The job can be heartbreaking and exhilarating, all in one day, but ask anyone within these walls and they’d tell you it’s hard to walk away.

The Daily Advertiser prepares to celebrate a milestone in October of telling the people’s story, your story, for a century-and-a-half.

There are very few other regional mastheads that can boast this feat.

The paper has changed the way we collect and distribute news and has been subject to more than one huge shift in business model.

We have lost our onsite printing press, had changes in ownership and even moved buildings after more than 100 years.

And it has been through the continued support of the community that the newspaper has been able to continue to thrive in this region.

The upcoming milestone is as much about celebrating and thanking the community for their support as commemorating a birthday.

Because without being let into your homes and businesses or onto the sporting fields, our jobs would be difficult. 

In the coming weeks, we will take a trip down memory lane, with each edition of a 10-part series focusing on a different aspect of the city’s history and how we have covered it.
