The Speaker of NSW Parliament, Shelley Hancock, announced the byelection date on Monday afternoon.

“Subsequent upon receipt of the resignation of Daryl Maguire on 3 August 2017, I wish to announce that the by-election for the vacant seat of Wagga Wagga will be held on Saturday 8 September 2018,” Mrs Hancock said.

“Accordingly, today I have advised the Electoral Commissioner Mr John Schmidt of my intention to issue a writ on Friday, 17 August 2018 for a by-election to be held on Saturday 8 September 2018 in the seat Wagga Wagga.”

Candidate nominations will open on August 17 and close on August 23.

Early voting will open on August 27.

The byelection coincides with Wagga Show and Riverina Football Netball League finals and the Wagga and District Junior Football Netball League grand final.

Mr Maguire resigned from parliament on Friday, three weeks after damaging revelations at an anti-corruption hearing about his attempt to profit from a Sydney property deal.

He had previously resisted calls to step down as an MP after quitting the Liberal Party, citing the cost of a byelection.

The Liberal Party is due to select a Wagga candidate next weekend from a field of one man and three women.

The National Party agreed not to run a candidate against its Coalition partner.

Labor has announced Dan Hayes as its candidate.

The Greens, One Nation and the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers parties have yet to announce any candidates.
