The Hawks emerged 4-2 victors at Burns Park but trailed 2-0 in the 30th minute after the Jaguars came out firing on their home patch.
“They really surprised us and they were hungry, much hungrier than we were,” McKenzie said.
“We had a few blokes out like Chris Wheeler and Matt Beazely, so we weren’t really communicating through the midfield and they took full advantage of that.”
McKenzie was key to the Hawks’ fightback, scoring a hat-trick to go with Matt Menser’s goal and ensuring a finals berth for his side.
The Hawks coach is considering filling the striker’s role in the absence of injured star Jake Ploenges, but there’s still plenty to work on.
“Results went our way this weekend … but we still need to keep winning games,” McKenzie said.
The Hawks are now just one point behind Tolland on the ladder.
