Frank Coorey, owner of My Chef Cuisine, is taking part in the Vinnies Community Sleepout in Wagga and is providing the Soup Kitchen for the night.
“As soon as they approached us we jumped at it straight away because we know there are people out there sleeping rough,” he said.
“To have the opportunity to make a difference is not only a privilege but a community social responsibility.”
Mr Coorey said he is passionate about providing people with nutritious, tasty food.
“For people who are vulnerable in the streets, good food is important,” he said.
“We are excited to be able to work with Vinnies and we are happy to hear the money is staying local.”
There are more than 100 homeless people in Wagga. Money raised in the local event will partly go towards the town’s main crisis accommodation centre, Edel Quinn.
The centre has both a residential program and an outreach support program and works together with men at risk of homelessness to find them stable accommodation and the community support they need.
The remainder will fund other Vinnies services such as home visits and support to local people facing crisis.
Vinnies Wagga executive officer Michael Rile said they are delighted with the amount of registrations so far.
“It is so pleasing to see such a variety of community members putting their hands up to learn more about homelessness issues and what they can do to help,” he said.
The Wagga Vinnies Community Sleepout will take place at the Equex Centre, McDonald Park on August 30.
