Looking to extend their winning streak to 13 games, the Sharks produced a complete performance despite the absence of Henri Gardner to stave off the improving Hawks.
Fred Gardner shone under lights at Rawlings Park, scoring a goal either side of half time to dominate the score sheet and stamp Lake Albert’s premiership credentials.
Gardner’s double marked his fourth brace for the season, however, the striker refused to take full credit for the win.
“It was just a really good game from everyone and the boys were really switched on,” he said.
“We knew we had to step up against Henwood Park because they’re always a strong side, but our defence was brilliant, our midfield was really good, and we all just got the job done.”
The win was Lake Albert’s second over the Hawks this season since losing last year’s grand final in a penalty shootout.
It’s a memory that still stings for the Sharks faithful.
“It’s definitely been about unfinished business for us when we’ve played them this year,” Gardner admitted.
“It’s hard playing against the Hawks and the boys showed a lot of character to get the win yesterday.”
Lake Albert’s victory sets up a mouthwatering clash with fourth-placed Leeton next weekend.
“Leeton’s tough and they’ve always been tough, whether it’s on their good days or on their bad days,” Gardner said.
“We beat them last time around up at their home ground, so it will be good to have the advantage when they come down here.”
