The Member for Wagga has been in the headlines consistently since a recording during an ICAC hearing was made public, where Mr Maguire appeared to be trying to gain financially from a business deal he was assisting with.

First, there was the outrage, by the public, politicians and especially residents in his electorate – us.

Then came the calls for him to resign.

It would have been the first time in about 20 years since parliament would have voted to overthrow one of their own.

Talking to people in the street, it hardly seemed like they wanted Mr Maguire representing them anymore.

The sentiments of the city’s leaders echoed the ones of their people.

The big question is why has it taken so long?

Would it not have been better to save face and go earlier then have it come to a subtle tap on the shoulder and potential mutiny?

We understand that Mr Maguire would not want to go willingly.

He made a very clear statement last week that he had no intention of resigning.

But the events and the attention of the last week-and-a-bit haven’t really left him any choice.

Mr Maguire will leave a legacy behind for his former electorate – the hospital, police station, court house and clay target shooting centre are all his projects – but unfortunately, he will be remembered for other things.

It might have taken longer than people wanted, and it might not even be his decision, but Mr Maguire is stepping down.

The people are getting what they want.

Perhaps it’s time we put the scandal behind us, focus on the byelection and electing a candidate we have faith and confidence in.

This byelection is costing money so think about who you vote for.

Don’t think about making Wagga a ‘safe seat’.

This is a chance for the electorate to start fresh and for the people to elect someone who will leave just as big of a memorable legacy as Mr Maguire.
