Richards joined Simon Miller in second place, just one behind Nick Heywood, after the Albury race meeting on Tuesday.
Richards was the only jockey in the top five to land a winner when he guided French Politician ($8.00) to victory for Albury trainer Andrew Dale.
Heywood remains in the lead with 27 wins, one ahead of Miller and Richards on 26 with two Southern District race meetings remaining in the season.
Nick Souquet (25), Kayla Nisbet (24) and Rebeka Prest (24) also remain in the hunt.
It has been a big effort by Richards just to be in the finish in his first full season as a jockey.
Wagga’s Trevor Sutherland is set to win his fourth Southern District trainer’s premiership after extending his lead at Albury.
Sutherland leads by eight wins after enjoying success with Riverbend Chief ($26.00).
Craig Widdison sits in second place.
The Southern District season moves to Narrandera on Sunday, before concluding at Albury on July 31.
