The basketball veteran broke a bone in her hand in the unlikeliest of circumstances and won’t take to the court this weekend.
“It’s not even a good story, really,” Stephens said.
“I was just chasing a ball and it really bent my fingers back (on impact).
“I’m off to see the surgeon today … but the timing definitely isn’t ideal.”
Stephens has been a rock in Wagga’s Waratah League campaign this season, featuring in seven games and adding a strong defensive presence to the side.
It’s the kind of player the Blaze will sorely miss during their upcoming double header against ladder-leaders Maitland and fifth-placed Newcastle.
Wagga needed to bounce back after last week’s disappointing 52-40 loss to Goulburn, but Stephens is confident her side can get the job done without her.
“I think we’ll still come home with a few wins,” she said.
“We know Maitland are in really good form, but we’ve beaten them this year.
“Newcastle will also be tough and they’ve got a solid defence, but we beat them pretty well when we played earlier.”
Currently sitting fourth on the table, Wagga require at least one win from their two upcoming games to stay ahead of Newcastle and Goulburn.
