Wagga’s giant-killing under 13 girls hockey side will return to Division Three of the Hockey NSW Field State Championships next year after taking out the Division Four title in Taree last weekend.
The new-look side dropped their first game against Newcastle but went on to win their four remaining pool games and book a spot in the semi finals.
Wagga beat semi final opponents Central Coast 6-0 in their earlier pool clash and went into the contest as firm favourites.
The margin was far slimmer in sudden death with Wagga emerging 1-0 victors to set up a grand final clash with Newcastle.
Held scoreless in their previous encounter, Wagga rose to the occasion against Newcastle to record a 4-0 win and seal their promotion to Division Three.
Coach Carla Bailey attributed her side’s early wobbles to a lengthy road trip and subsequent early morning game but was pleased with the final result.
“They played really well over the weekend, it was really strong attacking hockey,” Bailey.
