The Wanderers led Sydney club FC Gazy 1-0 for most of the game after an early Caylum Barber strike put the hosts in a commanding position at Gissing Oval.
Still holding a one-goal buffer with 12 minutes to play, it seemed the Wanderers were destined for a positive result.
Enter FC Gazy danger man Costandi Fallas.
The recent squad addition was yet to score in his State League career but found himself in the right place to equalise with a pot shot from inside the Wanderers box.
Fast forward to the 82nd minute and Fallas was again Johnny-on-the-spot, putting foot to ball and finding the net out of an attacking scramble to hand FC Gazy an unlikely lead at the death.
Wanderers captain Robert Fry was disappointed to not seal a win and branded his side “the better team” on the day.
“We were leading for most of the game and on top for most of the game too,” Fry said.
Barber was impressive up front for the Wanderers while Sam Jones and Prince Thompson produced quality performances on their home track.
“Caylum was probably our standout performer out there and Sam set him up really well for that early goal,” Fry said.
The Wanderers must dust themselves off ahead of their rematch with South Coast Flame next weekend at Gissing Oval.
The Wanderers claimed their only win of the season against South Coast back in round four after Tyler Allen and Duncan Cameron found the back of the net in a 2-0 thriller.
Fry is keen to see his side emulate that result next Saturday.
“We beat them the first time around and I think that while they will have improved, we’ve also made some improvements since then,” Fry said.
“It’ll be another tough game but we’re definitely looking at taking three points away from it.”
