The 64-year-old, who has yet to be named, was walking home from a Grong Grong pub at about 7pm on Friday, June 15 when he was struck.
Police said the man had crossed the level street crossing near the silos, about 400 meters away from Narrandera Street, when the east-bound wheat-bearing train hit him.
The 64-year-old was killed on impact.
Emergency services rushed to the area and a crime scene was established, with detectives, state rail representatives, local police, volunteer rescue associations and council members in attendance.
The train driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing; however, Murrumbidgee Police District Chief Inspector John Wadsworth said the fatality appeared to be an accident.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
