Conlan has been playing in Canberra where he was hoping to break into the Demons’ North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) team.
After making a one-off appearance for Griffith a fortnight ago, when he was among the Swans’ best in their win against Collingullie-Glenfield Park, Conlan was convinced to rejoin his high-flying home club.
“He’s here for the rest of the year, we got a clearance for him,” Griffith coach Will Griggs said.
“We’re very, very happy. It’s very rare that you get a mid-season trade of someone of his ability so we couldn’t be happier.
“He’s a junior as well so the boys are pretty excited to have him back.
“It would’ve been nice for them to give him a bit more of a chance at the Canberra Demons but once you don’t get selected (in the NEAFL side) you’re playing in a team that’s not the high quality and it probably wasn’t the best thing for his football.
“So he decided to come home, which is good for us, I guess.”
Still a teenager, Conlan is in his fourth year of senior football. He played 34 first grade games in the last three seasons, including 16 goals in 12 games last year.
Griggs said Conlan’s height and athleticism makes him a valuable addition, on the back of a big pre-season in Canberra.
“He’s super fit. I wouldn’t want to be playing on him,” Griggs said.
He is set to create headaches for the Swans’ opposition by forming a potent attack along with younger brother Lucas, who has kicked 15 goals in six games this year but was on rep duty when Jacob played against Collingullie-GP.
That starts on Saturday at Robertson Oval where Griffith will aim to complete a perfect first half of the season against Wagga Tigers.
But they certainly aren’t taking an eighth straight win for granted.
“They’ve given us a fair hiding over there a few times although we beat them (by two points) there last year and that basically kicked them out of finals,” Griggs said.
“But we expect them to be tough and a young and quick team so we’ll have to be on our A-game as usual.
“We’re excited to be on a big, wide ground, which will suit us to a T, but it should be a good contest.”
The Swans will have Dean Bennett making his debut after a strong season so far in the under 17s
“It’s that time of the season where it’s probably time to start blooding some of the kids and giving them a taste of senior footy,” Griggs said.
Bennett’s been named in a forward pocket but may also feature on the wing.
