It can be hard to talk yourself up, but John Karhu, an employment advisor with Sureway’s Disability Employment Services, offers his tips and advice for brushing up your resume.
Tip 1: Keep your design simple
As an ex-employer I hated having resumes come in that you had to take a day to read. Things to keep in mind: don't use tables to format, use Ariel font because it is government recommended and keep font size at a minimum of 11.
Make sure you keep the resume straight to the point.
Tip 2: Include important key words
When someone puts up a job they may get 2000 applications for the same role, a lot of these go through the computer which looks for key words.
If you're looking for a job as security guard, you need to have words such as security and experience.
The computer will reject it straight away if you don't have the key words pertaining to the job.
Tip 3: Use relevant examples
Your application should include examples of you experience and how it is relevant to the position description.
For example, if the position calls for exceptional time-management skills you should include a practical example of this.
Tip 4: Tailor your resume to the job you're applying for
Each role and employer may require different skills. You have to adjust your resume and you have to change wording to suit that job.
Older applicants should consider cutting experience listings to the last 10-15 years for relevancy. It is not required to include your age on your resume.
Tip 5: Consider getting professional help if all else fails
Don't be ashamed if you think your resume is not up to standard or you’re not getting a call back, consider registering with an employment provider or paying a professional.
It might be the best thing you’ve ever done.
Extra tricks to go the extra mile
I would say put your interest in there where relevant, so people know what type of person you are.
Make sure you're references are up to date and make sure they will give you a good review.
Never give up. I applied for a lot of jobs in one year and I actually got three at the same time. I know it can seem hopeless, but it never is. You will get a job and hopefully the right job for you.
Keep your chin up because if you want to work you're employable.
