The two mid-table sides locked horns in Tumut and played for 73 minutes before the match was reportedly abandoned by match officials.
Leeton held a 3-1 lead courtesy of an Anthony Trifogli hat-trick and looked to seal the game but didn’t get the chance to do so after the referee called time early at Bull Paddock.
Leeton coach Mick Doolin said he understood there was some kind of altercation between the referee and supporters from the Tumut club but stressed he did not understand the circumstance in its entirety.
“We were playing the game and sometime during the second half, the referee asked a supporter from the home team to leave after saying something from the sideline,” Doolin said.
“I didn’t hear exactly what was going on but he asked the supporter to leave and that person did end up leaving and sitting in their car.
“The game continued for another 10 minutes or so and then the referee stopped the game again.”
Both Doolin and Tumut captain Matt Lopez agreed the game was played in good spirits with very few on-field incidences.
“There were no yellow cards from memory and it was a really clean match,” Lopez said.
“No-one’s really sure about what happened.”
Doolin said he hoped Leeton would still be awarded competition points from the fixture.
“We were winning 3-1 so I’d expect that result is held,” he said.
Football Wagga competition coordinator Jason McKenzie confirmed an investigation regarding Sunday’s events had been launched but could not provide a timeline for resolution.
“Match reports are due within 24 hours of the game and then the whole process takes place,” McKenzie said.
“Depending on how straightforwards it is, this could drag on until the end of the week.”
