The Cherrypickers scored 16 unanswered points to take a 16-10 win over Tumut at Twickenham on Sunday.
A second half double from 17-year-old Nic Hall set up the win.
After losing their first eight games this season injured captain-coach James Woolford was thrilled to finally come away with the points.
“It was really pleasing and I’m really proud of the boys,” Woolford said.
“It was a super effort.”
After pushing Brothers before the bye, Woolford thought the win had been coming for the club.
“I thought against Brothers we were really good, especially our second half,” he said. “The bye probably came at a bad time for us …. but our second half of footy against Brothers was our best half of footy all year and we brought that into today.”
Tumut went out to a 10-0 lead after tries to Riley Sturt and Brayden Draber for Nayah Freeman hit back just before half-time for Young.
Despite a shoulder complaint that saw him miss the second half, Freeman was able to rise up to take a Bobby Roberts kick and score.
Woolford thought it was an important boost heading into half-time.
“We went into the break pretty happy and knew if we stuck to our processes and did the little things right we would give ourselves every chance of winning the game,” he said.
“That is what we did.”
Hall then came on and his effort’s impressed.
Slotting into fullback, the young gun played above his years.
“He only turned 17 two weeks ago so he couldn’t really until then but he sat on the bench for us and got his crack just after half-time,” Woolford said.
“He really made a difference for us.”
Adam Pearce had a 100th first grade game for Tumut to forget with the loss and an ankle injury.
The Blues have slipped back out of the top four, slipping behind Gundagai on percentage.
