Narrandera went desperately close to recording their first win of the year as the Bulldogs goalled in the dying minutes to steal victory, 9.13 (67) to 10.3 (63) at Maher Oval.
Turvey Park had the better of general play but were unable to capitalise against a Narrandera team that came to life.
The Eagles kicked five goals to one in the second term to lead by five points at half-time and then only had three scoring shots in the third quarter but they were all goals to maintain an eight-point advantage at the final change.
Turvey Park were not about to lay down, staring down a fifth straight loss, and threw everything at the Eagles.
They eventually got there, but only in the final minutes in a thrilling finale.
Turvey Park coach Truman Carroll was full of mixed emotions after the game.
“It’s a rollercoaster, this coaching role,” Carroll said.
“We played four pretty good quarters last week and lost and today we were pretty disappointing for four quarters and won.
“I’m relieved I guess. I’m frustrated we’re not consistent but it’s a win.”
Turvey Park had nine more scoring shots than Narrandera but took until the final minutes to get the job done.
Carroll said inaccuracy in front of goal almost cost them the four points.
“It was one of those games, we should have put them away in the first quarter,” he said.
“Our scoring was terrible and it kept them in the game, our incorrect scoring. At the other end, they just had one of those days where everything they touched, they kicked a goal.
“Being behind going into the last quarter, we had to dig deep and it worked out in the end.”
Carroll said the Bulldogs did not change anything in the final term with perseverance simply paying off.
“We kicked goals instead of points, to be honest, that’s the only thing that changed,” he said.
“Earlier we hadn’t kicked goals when we needed to but we got a couple of goals in the last quarter to reward our effort, which is good.
“The winner didn’t come until about five minutes to go, which was a bit nervewracking for supporters...and the coach.”
Jackson Weideman was the Bulldogs’ best across half-back, while Josh Ashcroft returned and had an immediate impact at centre-half-forward and in the ruck.
Unfortunately for Turvey Park, Jayden Carroll popped his shoulder out in the opening quarter.
Jarred Lane was Narrandera’s best, followed by Jacob Anderson and Isaac Williams. Corey Baxter kicked another four goals for the Eagles.
