Unleaded petrol prices have hit a four-year high in many capital cities, with prices also maintaining an upward trend in many communities across the region.
The average price of unleaded petrol in Wagga for the week ending on Sunday was 153.1 cents per litre (cpl), according to the Australian Institute of Petroleum – an increase of 2.4 cents on the previous week and just above the NSW average of 152.6cpl.
On Wednesday, the cheapest regular unleaded in Wagga – according to the Fuel Check website – was 147.5cpl at Metro Fuel and the Silvalite Fuel Stop, both in Ashmont. The most expensive was 158.3cpl at the Caltex on Fitzmaurice Street.
In Griffith, there was a 15-cent difference between the lowest and highest regular unleaded prices, while in Albury that variation was about 16 cents per litre.
Fuel Check data showed the cheapest regular unleaded in the state was 129cpl at the independent service station at Gerogery, between Albury and Culcairn.
At the other end of the scale, Ivanhoe’s independent servo was among the most expensive locations in NSW at 169.9cpl (although, it was still a lot cheaper than 189.9cpl at White Cliffs).
The cost of unleaded petrol jumped 5.1 per cent to an average 142.5cpl in most capital cities in the past three months, a survey by comparison website comparethemarket.com.au found.
That's the highest price since mid-2014, with some drivers paying more than $1.60 a litre, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
ACCC chairman Rod Sims said concern about the global supply of crude oil had pushed up oil prices.
"Unfortunately, the international factors pushing up wholesale petrol prices mean that these higher prices are being passed on to Australian motorists at the petrol bowser," Mr Sims said.
However, relief could be on the horizon. NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said prices should begin to ease at the bowser after an OPEC meeting on June 22, when its 14 member countries are expected to announce plans to increase oil production.
"There should be relief in sight over the coming weeks and months hopefully," Mr Khoury said.
