Marrar will celebrate 100 years of football when they take on Northern Jets at Langtry Oval.
Celebrations will continue at a function at the Marrar Hall on Saturday night, where a Team of the Century in football and netball will be unveiled, amongst other things.
The words ‘we will not be done’ are repeated through Marrar’s club song and it is the theme of Saturday’s celebration.
Marrar, with a population of about 250, have won 12 senior premierships since their inception in 1918.
But it is the fact that the club is still standing, thriving, on their own two feet is what Marrar president Terry Langtry, a third generation Bomber, is most proud of.
“You see all the clubs that have amalgamated, or put a name on the end, to survive,” Langtry said.
“With the population we’ve got, to stand alone, we’re pretty proud of it. And we should be very proud of that.”
Langtry said the secret to Marrar’s longevity is simple.
“Community support. That’s probably the biggest factor,” he said.
“It’s the people behind you. Good families, strong committees, that’s the reason.
“You’ve got to have good people around you, good people at the club and that’s what makes us what we are today.”
Marrar will head into Saturday's celebration undefeated on top of the Farrer League ladder, on the back of last year’s drought-breaking premiership.
“That’s a bonus," Langtry said.
AFL ACT & Southern NSW regional manager Steven Mahar congratulated Marrar on such a magnificent feat.
“It is an enormous achievement,” Mahar said.
“Running a club on a yearly basis is difficult enough, but to reach the 100 year milestone for the small Marrar community is massive and they all should be congratulated for it.
“The Footy and Netball club is the heart of every town and this presents a great opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge Marrar’s rich history. For the current players it will be great to connect and see former players or volunteers that have made the club what it is today.”
The official centenary proceedings on game day will take place at 1.45pm, where a book titled ‘We Will Not Be Done – a celebration of 100 years’ on the club’s history will be launched, as well as a centenary plaque unveiled.
The evening function will start at about 6pm, where centenary guernseys will be auctioned and Teams of the Century announced.
Buses will be running between Wagga and Marrar throughout the day and night.
