For the second consecutive year, Mater Dei were unable to stop a bigger and stronger Kildare Catholic College team in the schoolboy showpiece event.
Mater Dei started sensationally to lead by 16 points at quarter time but fell to a 30-point defeat.
“They started the way we needed to start but we only kicked two goals after that,” Irvine said.
“We won all the ball and our tackling pressure was really good in the first quarter and then they started winning the footy in the second quarter and when they’re that good, and that good up forward, it’s hard.
“I thought our boys tackled well in the first half but they started getting a bit cleaner through the second and third quarters.”
Mater Dei lost Nathanael Mooney to a quad injury in the third quarter, while Jack Carey (shoulder) and Josh Currie (ankle) also picked up injuries late.
Mooney was a shining light, kicking 4.2, until injured, while Carey and Wes Clark were also good in defeat.
