Lake Albert captain Ben Angel has admitted his surprise at the Sharks’ early success in this year’s Pascoe Cup competition but ruled out complacency ahead of Saturday’s clash with Young.

Last year’s beaten grand finalists have opened their season in style, stringing four wins together before trouncing fellow premiership contenders Henwood Park (4-1) and Tolland (6-2) in the past fortnight.
“I’m honestly surprised with the way things have gone so far but we’re really pleased with our results,” Angel said.
“We’ve had good numbers down to training and we’ve been running some pretty intense sessions, so everyone’s happy at the moment.”
It’s a far cry from Angel’s preseason concerns about training attendance and with more players pressing their case for first grade, the skipper is finding selections increasingly difficult.
“We’ve had a few new players come along who have played well and reserve grade players are really pushing for a spot in the firsts,” Angel said.
“Blokes like Nick Anderson and Jarrod Eaton have been impressive and we’re looking at another incoming player so there’s no guarantee for positions at the moment.”
In-house competition might be at an all-time high but Angel is wary of the challenge presented by Young this weekend.
The Lions sent a warning to rival clubs after stunning Henwood Park 3-0 in round five and Lake Albert will hard pressed to match the northerners’ enthusiasm.
“They’re a very young and very fast side who’ve had some strong results this year,” Angel said.
“I think we were lucky to get away with a 1-0 win when we last played them and we’ll have to be on the lookout for their counterattack.”
The two sides will meet at Rawlings Park 1 on Saturday for a 7pm kick off.
