Despite temperatures dropping low enough earlier this month for snow to fall in Batlow, the region is currently basking in some unseasonably mild weather.

The upcoming week in Wagga will be above the May average of 17.4, with temperatures reaching 22 degrees on Monday. 

Nigel Smedley from the Wagga office of the Bureau of Meteorology said we would expect the temperatures to be dropping around this time, but the warmer weather is not unusual. 

“We have this large high pressure system and it’s drifting over our region,” he said. 

“When you have this high pressure, we tend to have cold nights but relatively stable weather during the day once the clouds have cleared.” 

The hottest day on record is 27.4 degrees and that was on May 4, 1988, the hottest day so far for May this year is 23.8 on May 8. 

“So far for the month we are averaging 19 degrees and that’s about 1.6 degrees above average,” Mr Smedley said. 

The forecast of rain is still looking bleak, on Sunday there is a 30 per cent chance and Tuesday a 5 per cent chance of less than 3 millilitres.

Mr Smedley said interestingly the further south you go the more rain you get.

“There is a cold front coming through and we are only going to get bits and pieces,” he said. 

“Albury has a 70 per cent chance of getting up to 10 millilitres but in Wagga we are only going to get bits and pieces.”
