Pitting five Wagga schools against each other in a round-robin format of 15-minute games, the Henderson Shield went to a virtual final when the day’s two unbeaten teams, Mater Dei and Kooringal High, met in the last round.
We had four rugby players but it was then how the league and AFL players filled the gaps around them.
- Michael Kanck, Mater Dei coach
After opening up an early advantage, MDCC then held on to win by a converted try against a quickly-closing Kooringal, 19-12.
“Kooringal were coming home strongly, we were probably glad when it was full-time,” MDCC coach Michael Kanck said.
“I think it was probably our culture that worked for us. We had four rugby players but it was then how the league and AFL players filled the gaps around them.”
Backs Corey Toole, Wes Clark, Nathanael Mooney and Theo Heinjus were strong throughout.
Mater Dei had enjoyed wins against Wagga Christian College (26-0), The Riverina Anglican College (22-0) and Kildare Catholic College (22-0) earlier in the day, as had Kooringal.
One of the day’s’ highlights was a win for Christian College over Kildare, having returned to the competition for the first time in some years.
