A goal from George Kendall levelled things with three minutes to play, but the 35-all draw wasn’t enough for Kooringal to progress.
Kooringal kicked more goals than their rivals, but Wagga High’s percentage from their win over Mt Austin High was enough to see them book a place against Kildare Catholic College next week.
After missing out on percentage last year, coach Heath Russell was pleased to be on the better side of the equation this time around.
“It is a bit unfortunate for Kooringal but that is the way it was got to happen,” Russell said.
“It is one of those things with this competition and I am really happy for my boys.
“They deserved it in the end but we were a bit inaccurate in front of goals.”
Three goals from Jordy Prestage, including two in the second quarter, set the tone for Wagga High.
They led by seven points at the half-time before Kooringal responded to lead by three points at the last change after Connor Willis kicked his second and Jackson Fisher also goaled.
Prestage kicked a goal in the opening minute of the final term to put Wagga High in front and they stayed there until Kendall’s late goal but neither team could then add to their total.
Meanwhile inaccuracy in front of goal proved costly for Kildare as Mater Dei Catholic College topped Pool A.
Courtesy of three Corey Toole goals, Mater Dei came away with a 5.4 (34) to 2.13 (25) victory.
Coach Nathan Irvine was pleased to come away with win.
“It was pretty scrappy and obviously Kildare had a lot of chances but the boys hung tough which was good,” Irvine said.
“We probably didn’t do forward as often but when we did we kicked some goals and took advantage of a couple 50 metre penalties for free kicks in the forward line.
“It was good.”
