Mater Dei Primary School’s girls team is through to the Southern NSW final after winning the final against Henschke Primary School.

Mater Dei were rewarded for their accuracy, winning 3.0 (18) to Henschke’s 2.4 (16) at Jubilee Park.

South Wagga Public School and Lockhart’s St Joseph’s Primary School won through to the final in the boy’s division.

The boy’s final will be held on Carroll Cup final night at Robertson Oval on May 30.

It was a good effort from the Lockhart school after they won the qualifying day at Culcairn last Friday to book a spot in the Wagga gala day.

St Josephs beat Turvey Park Public in one semi-final, while South Wagga got the better of Lake Albert Public in the other.

AFL Southern NSW game development manager Marc Geppert was pleased to see an even spread of winners throughout a busy day.

“It was good to see this year that a lot of the public schools did very well. They are certainly catching up to the catholic schools which is good to see," Geppert said.

About 500 students across 38 teams took part in this year’s event.

“We had the same amount of competitive girls teams as we did boys and that’s certainly a first,” Geppert said.

“To have 500 kids here on the one day is great for the sport.

“The modified format allows us to get that many playing at once, which is great. It also means smaller grounds and kids get more of the footy, which is good.”
