Our families are where we experience our biggest triumphs and our deepest vulnerabilities.
National Families Week is held every year between May 15 and 21 and is Australia’s annual celebration of the importance of families, timed to coincide with the UN International Day of Families on May 15.
The enduring theme is ‘Stronger Families, Stronger Communities’ to celebrate the vital role that families play in community wellbeing.
Research shows that children who have a strong “family narrative” enjoy better emotional health. The more the children knew, the stronger their sense of control over their lives and the higher their self-esteem.
Marymead recognises the importance and significance of National Families Week, having provided a range of high quality, innovative support services to children, young people and their families since 1967.
Marymead now has offices in Canberra, Goulburn, Moruya, Young and Wagga.
Marymead’s array of programs and services now include child and family counselling, disability support, parent education, mental health and family support programs, post separation support, residential care and supervised contact and changeover.

Due to Marymead’s rapid growth and expansion of services within the Wagga and surrounding regions, Marymead and its permanency program has moved into larger premises at 49 Best Street.
The permanency program includes foster care, restoration support, adoption and guardianship - all with the common goal of creating permanency for the child or young person.
Today, more than ever, there is a significant shortage of carers, namely, people who are willing and able to provide a safe and nurturing home for children and young people aged zero to 18.
Carers are provided with all the support they need, including initial and ongoing training, an experienced and dedicated case worker who will provide ongoing support and guidance, financial support and opportunities for carers to network together.
For information regarding Marymead’s permanency program or any of its other programs or services phone Marymead on 1800 427 920, email programs@marymead.org.au or visit marymead.org.au. Celebrate National Families Week at the Wagga Botanic Gardens on Saturday May 19 from 11am to 2pm. Go to nfw.org.au for more information.
