But this time the call is for coverage beyond just the main street, with a focus on areas around the CBD.
The main street at night can be a wondrous place, it can also be dark and full of terrors.
There is very little lighting, which can cause a problem when navigating your way between establishments or preparing to hail a taxi home.
A 22-year-old Wagga man was the victim of a coward punch at the weekend.
Residents are not saying more CCTV cameras would have stopped the punch, but the victim, who cannot remember much of the attack, is hoping footage (which doesn’t exist) could provide answers.
The cameras have acted as a deterrent but not as a fix for violent or destructive behaviour.
The presence of a camera might curb vandals but it will do little to stop people drinking inside licensed premises and making bad decisions because of excessive alcohol consumption.
Drinks are flowing, tensions are high and it seems to be right at the end of the night, once the damage has been done, that those tensions spill onto the main street or the walk home or to the taxi rank.
They will, however, assist in catching those who continue to commit these crimes.
Wagga’s pub and club scene is growing and thriving and we want residents to take full advantage of this, safely.
More lighting or an increased camera presence in streets surrounding the main street might allow for a greater sense of security.
The Committee 4 Wagga said they believe that the cameras have already contributed to a reduction in anti-social behaviour and destruction of property.
More cameras would be about assuring perpetrators are caught by providing police with more angles to view the crimes from.
The incident at the weekend also raises the issue of cameras in outlying suburbs, such as Tolland, Ashmont and Glenfield Park.
A presence in the suburbs might do just as much to deter the amount of break and enters and car fires that seem to be plaguing the city.
Do you think Wagga needs more CCTV cameras or are they a waste of money?
