The Main City Levee project was in doubt last month after a quality assurance assessment found earth compaction works conducted by the contractor, Central West Civil, were not completed to a sufficient standard.
This sparked a review of the completed works, resulting in the redevelopment of entire sections of the project and an estimated three-month setback.
Fast forward to late-April and there has been a marked improvement.
Now, Mr Woods has hailed the “complete rebuild” of sections and the impending completion of Stage One as a “major milestone” for the city.
“It’s fantastic ... and it’s a great milestone for Wagga to see this section of the levee completed and then move on with other sections of the levee,” he said.
“This section of the levee has been completely rebuilt and tested to the satisfaction [of council].
“The process added three months onto the project but we’ve we’ve worked with the contractor to resolve those issues.”
The completed spillway is approximately 350 metres in length and Stage One of the project is now expected to be finished by the end of May.
“We’re now laying the concrete for the spillway down at Flowerdale Lagoon … which will allow the river to flow back into the city [in the event of a flood],” Mr Woods said.
“By the end of May we’ll be finished pouring concrete through this section and that will be the end of this contractor’s work.”
The dry weather has been a welcome boost for construction with concrete drying more easily in the current conditions.
“There’s been more than 40 cubic metres of concrete poured per panel … and all the concrete has been supplied locally,” Mr Woods said.
“The weather’s also been kind to us.”
Tenders for Stage Two of the project are complete but have not yet been released by council.
