The new baby donkey born to parents Jenny and Forrest drew headlines last month but has until today remained nameless.
Wagga, meet Bubba!
After an exhaustive search and community consultation, zoo staff decided to keep the tradition of ‘Forrest Gump’ monikers alive.
Horticultural supervisor Henry Pavitt said he was amazed by the community’s participation and investment in the naming process.
“More than 150 suggestions for names were posted to Council’s Facebook page,” he said.
“Popular entries receiving numerous votes included Lieutenant Dan, Cadbury, Bubba, Duffy, and Shrimp.”
Mr Pavitt said Duffy had been another popular name.
“This was the name of a donkey used by stretcher bearer John Simpson to ferry the wounded at Gallipoli in 1915,” he said.
The 150 entries were collated and then shortlisted down to three by the council staff who care for the animals housed at the Botanic Gardens Zoo.
The winning name was then selected by commercial operations director Caroline Angel.
