The Lions only had four less scoring shots than Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes in the 13.4 (82) to 3.10 (28) at Mangoplah Sportsground on Saturday.
Despite falling away in the last quarter, the returning coach was pleased with most of their performance.
“There is a lot to like,” Macri said.
“We didn’t score well enough and 3.10 on a perfect day is not great, but having held them to six goals for three quarters was a really good effort.
“We were right in the game at three-quarter time, but just couldn’t capitalise in that third quarter, and unfortunately they moved the footy really quickly in the last quarter and we were done.
“We couldn’t keep up to them and they were way too good in the end.”
Things don’t much easier with the Lions to tackle an in-form Griffith at Ganmain Sportsground on Sunday.
Meanwhile the Lions could be without new recruit Josh Bubnich after he was charged following the loss to the Goannas on Saturday.
Bubnich was charged with rough conduct after MCUE’s Charlie Chambers was left concussed.
The conduct was deemed careless, the impact high and the contact high.
It attracts a base sanction of three games but can be reduced to two with an early guilty plea.
