The Bluett Crescent home was the only one found to contain the deadly material, of more than 5300 tested.
Over the past two weeks, the house had been wrapped in heavy-duty plastic and the asbestos was removed using industrial vacuum cleaners, before being bagged and taken to Albury for disposal. The interior of the house had been sprayed with a sealant to trap any remaining asbestos.
Two hoses sprayed the property with water as an excavator smashed through the roof, pulling walls down toward the centre of the block.
Longtime neighbour Heather Douglas said it was sad to see the house torn down.
“I had a lot of good times in that house,” she said. “It was owned by Norma and Les Day and they were welcoming, kind, thoughtful people. I knew every part as it came down, there goes the beautiful bay window, there goes Norma’s bedroom.”
