THE last couple of weeks I have written about our native Murray Cod and the do’s and don’ts of what we should and shouldn’t do to help sustain these wonderful fish.

However, not everyone is a cod fisherman and there have been a lot of locals heading up to the Alpine waters chasing the spotted mountain carp, commonly known as trout.
I only call them spotted mountain carp in jest and that is only because they are an introduced species.
I do like fishing for them although the last couple of trips I have found them very elusive.
The ones that are unlucky enough to get caught by me in the high country impoundments are extremely good eating with the bright orange and very sweet tasting flesh – they taste like yabbies.
Tantangara has been very popular with lots of locals heading that way over the past couple of weekends, even my (whoops sorry – our) daughter and her partner with a couple of friends ventured there the other weekend.
Last weekend Tantangara was pretty busy although with the wind that turned up I would say not many would have ventured onto the water.
Eucumbene has some pretty big “surf” as well and as I have said before the waves on an impoundment are not like those in the salt, they are usually white caps and very short and sharp
A big boat is a must and I have been told that a couple of time Fisheries have been there in their seven metre plate boat and waves have been hitting the top of the cabin – time to be not on the water.
Eucumbene is pretty low at the moment as well with the Portal pretty much inaccessible by boat but if you are a weaver of the wand it would be more than worth a go walking the banks especially if there is a trickle of water going in.
Last weekend Tantangara was pretty busy although with the wind that turned up I would say not many would have ventured onto the water.
I used to have an annual Freeze Your Bum Off fishing trip to Eucumbene around July to Eucumbene but as I get older I find I get colder so tis no more.
Maybe I am just getting soft so I think I will go to the coast instead and wave to Euc as I go by.
