For six years, Robyn Crouch has been raising money to help struggling villages in Cambodia, but now she’s using the state government’s Return and Earn scheme to transform Wagga’s waste into much-needed aid.
“We go over there and buy food, do food drops, clothing, books for kids, it depends on the needs we see,” she said. “Over there there’s no such thing as free healthcare or pensions, not much free schooling – they need to have a uniform and books – a lot can’t afford that. It’s $5 for a uniform but they live on $1 a day.”
With so many charities needing support in Wagga, Ms Crouch saw the reverse vending machines near Woolworths as a great way to raise money. Putting the call out on social media, she now collects cans and bottles from Magpies Nest, Mock Orange and Bistro 73.
“After six years I think everyone was sick of me with my hand out,” she laughed. “Seeing how little they have makes you appreciate every little thing you have… When we do a food drop it’s like Christmas to them.”
