The university club proved far too good after taking a big win over Griffith at Exies Oval on Saturday.

With the Blacks coming off a strong win over Wagga City to start the season, it shaped as a tough road trip for Aggies.

However they were in control of the contest from the get go to take a 28-5 win.

Putting the pressure on with some early penalty goals from Gerard McTaggart, Ag College took a 16-0 lead into the break and continued to put in a strong performance in the second half.

Coach Will Mitchell was pleased to come away with their first win of the season.

“The boys defended really well and I am really happy with our forward pack,” Mitchell said.

“We played the game in the right spots which we really lacked last week.”

Ag College struggled against the experience Waratahs outfit but Mitchell was pleased with their approach to the clash with the Blacks.

They went in trying to cut out their second phase options and did so, especially with the Blacks running with the strong wind in the second half.

“We were confident heading in it,we had the right game plan and the boys executed the game plan pretty well,” he said.

“It was about playing to our strengths and trying to attack their weaknesses, which the boys did really well.

“To only concede five points in the second half, when we didn’t have much ball, was pretty good and shows a lot of character.”

Mitchell made the big call to bring playmakers Hamish Pennington and Andy Stanham back from injury.

It was a move that paid off.

Not only did they get through the clash unscathed by were among Ag College’s best.

Mike van Diggelen also had a strong game for Aggies, getting through plenty of work while Oscar Sykes was also good in the forwards.

After a positive start to the season, Griffith coach Craig Morriss was disappointed by his team’s lack of discipline.

He thought it proved very costly

“We knew they were a young fit side and well drilled,” Morriss said. 

“We said we were going to play the game tight and going to control the ball and have good line speed and we didn't produce much of that today.”

Ag College will be looking to pick up where they left off with ahead of another long road trip.

They head to Albury on Saturday to tackle the winless Steamers while Griffith will be looking to head back to winning ways against CSU.
