It is the reason former Wagga woman Leasha Craig embarked on a four-year project, using art and poetry to honour the lives of men and women who had served in the armed forces.
Launched on the Central Coast, the experiences and memories of ex-military men and women have been captured in drawings, paintings, sculptures and prose.
Ms Craig said the 23 artworks and poetry pieces now made up a travelling exhibition, Australian Spirit, which arrived in Wagga on Wednesday.
“The exhibition is very compelling and emotive,” Ms Craig said. “We’ve had great outcomes.”
She said the project was initiated to encourage and inspire others to do the same in their local area.
“We’ve captured the lives of everyday people who have gone on to serve their country,” Ms Craig said.
“We’re raising awareness of the sacrifices made by them and their families.”
The exhibition’s official reception was held on Thursday, from 5.30pm, with a special guest appearance from the Riverina MP and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.
