This is according to Wagga angler Craig (Harro) Harris, who said colder months were best for catching the elusive Murray cod.
He said the fish were riddled across the river system and could reach lengths of up to 1.4 meters.
Despite their mass, he said they were challenging to snag.
“It’s every anglers dream to catch a one-metre cod,” Mr Harris said. “The closest I’ve got is 90 centimetres."
While not to Mr Harris’s taste, he said the smaller fish – between 55 and 75cm – were often items on a Riverina angler’s menu.
“They taste like what they eat,” he said. "If they’re eating yukky stuff, they’ll taste yukky.”
