The economic benefi ts will flow from the industry and into the city itself with more people attracted to Wagga for racing – both for work and pleasure.

Starting this boom in the industry could be as simple as adding more stables with prize money continuing to increase for the Gold Cup Carnival and more focus on country trainers at a state level.

Murrumbidgee Turf Club CEO Scott Sanbrook said the addition of more stables needs to be taken seriously as it would attract new trainers to Wagga.

“The club has identified on-course stabling as a priority,” he said.

“Unfortunately Wagga has lost a considerable number of stables over the years, which places lower limits on the horse population utilising the training facility.

“On-course stables would be appealing for those trainers who are looking to expand or relocate to Wagga.”

Additional stables would compliment the current focus on country trainers.

“It’s an exciting time to be involved in country racing and Wagga is enjoying the benefits,” Mr Sanbrook said.

“The introduction of the Country Championships and the TAB Highway Handicaps have been a tremendous shot in the arm for country trainers and owners.

“As a club, we will be working hard to capitalise on the healthy state of racing.

“Over the past five years we have signifi cantly boosted prize money for our Cup Carnival and feature races, which is something we will continue to work on.

“And while we already have one of the best tracks and training facilities outside the metropolitan area, we will continue to focus on improving the racecourse’s facilities.”

This focus on increasing the number of horses and trainers in Wagga will, in turn, increase the number of people employed within the industry.

“By attracting more trainers to Wagga, we will increase the employments opportunities,” Mr Sanbrook said.

“On-course stabling would not only help the racing industry, but the wider community as well.

“The flow-on effect for the economy is amazing.”
