The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy annual Wagga gala day was held at Henwood Park on Monday where four of the city’s high schools went up against each other.
Wagga High dominated the Bill Turner Cup, for under 15s boys, with two commanding victories.
They progressed to the second round with a 7-0 over TRAC, then thrashed Mater Dei Catholic College 9-0 in the second round.
Kai Watts was the star for Wagga High, scoring seven goals from the two games.
Wagga High coach Phil Willis was pleasantly surprised by his team’s results.
“If you told me at the start of the day we were going to win 7-0 over TRAC and 9-0 over Mater Dei, I would have said you were telling me lies so I’m really pleased with the boys,” Willis said.
“They played good team football all day, I didn’t think there were any real standouts. Obviously a couple of boys had a really good day but just to see they came with the right attitude, started well in that first game, and yeah, it’s a really good day for the school.”
Wagga High will now play the winner of Wagga Christian College and Kildare Catholic College in the third round.
“I think the boys will do well. As long as they come with that same team-first attitude, they should do really well,” Willis said.
“They’re a good bunch of boys, they’re not big heads, they work really hard and I believe they can go a long way.”
In the Bill Turner Trophy, for under 15s girls, it was TRAC who proved a dominant force.
TRAC started the day with a 8-1 win over Wagga High, before backing that up with a 7-0 win over Kooringal High School in the second round.
TRAC coach Virginie Vignas was proud of her team’s performances.
“I’m just impressed,” Vignas said.
“I was even like, you don’t need me. You talk to each other, they’re loving it, just having fun, that’s what matters you know.”
TRAC will also play the winner of Wagga Christian College and Kildare Catholic College in the third round.
