Coach Adrian Purtell was pleased with the way his players regrouped after trailing 28-0 after 25 minutes.
“You always like to win, but I still thought a lot of positives came out of it,” Purtell said.
“It was our first full trial game so we will benefit from that.”
Thunder prop Brad Hill was strong while back Etu Uaisele and youngster Liam Wiscombe also impressed for the home team.
A handful of players including Joel Monaghan, Joe Silafau and Jon Huggett missed the clash.
Kangaroos coach Ben Jeffery played at five-eighth.
