Forget the city of good sports because Wagga is a city of insanely talented musicians and singers.
Getting up on stage and singing or playing an instrument can put you in a vulnerable position, especially if you’ve had little or no experience.
But the Wagga community is getting a reputation for allowing people to flex their creative muscles and either sink or swim on stage and in a live setting.
There are numerous open mic nights and afternoons held across the city, often with the same people in attendance, that usually get a good reception.
Because people don’t want to hear the same stuff over and over.
Often the most exciting part about seeing a big name band in a packed arena is the support acts that precede it.
There are hidden gems to be found in up-and-coming talent, if we are willing to look for them.
And Wagga has its eyes open.
The weekend’s Food and Wine Festival featured live music through the 10-hour event and the recent Fitz Live was welcomed with open arms and received good reviews.
One local residents has decided to give budding musicians a chance by providing them with a platform to showcase their original songs.
There’s very few things that go together as well as some local brews and local tunes.
Wagga’s music scene is made up of bands that expertly play covers and pub rock.
Don’t get us wrong, we love a bit of AC/DC or Cold Chisel and can rock out to an 80s power ballad, but showcasing original tunes is just as important as appreciating the classics.
It shows these performers that yes, we are willing to listen and yes, their talent is appreciated.
And who knows?
We could find the next big thing in Wagga, all because they had the courage to take their shot and the city chose to listen.
It’s also a good confidence boost for the city’s youth who might be toying with the idea of putting their music out there.
As we have seen, particularly recently, youth should never be afraid to have a voice and the rest of us should never make them feel ashamed to be heard, whether it is through their opinions or songs.
Congratulations to all who had the courage to take to the stage at the weekend.
