The Australian women's soccer team is currently in Perth for a training camp ahead of next Monday's friendly against Thailand at nib Stadium.

The team will then fly to Jordan, where they will attempt to win a second Asian Cup crown following on from their 2010 success.

The eight-team tournament doubles as World Cup qualification, with the Matildas needing to finish in the top five to guarantee their spot.

If they suffer a shock early exit from the Asian Cup, their World Cup hopes will be over.

Defender Clare Polkinghorne is optimistic the Matildas can achieve both their goals.

"We're going to the Asian Cup to win," Polkinghorne said.

"Qualifying for the World Cup is another main focus for us. It's the pinnacle of the sport.

"If we win the Asian Cup, we're guaranteed a spot in the World Cup.

"We've missed out on Olympics in the past, and it's not a good feeling. None of us want to miss a World Cup."

The Matildas are currently ranked fourth in the world, behind the US, Germany, and England.

Although they will be the highest-ranked nation at the Asian Cup, it will be no easy feat to win, especially with the likes of Japan and Korea looming large.

Japan beat the Matildas 1-0 in the Asian Cup final in 2014, and the Australians would love to gain a slice of revenge.

Monday's friendly against Thailand will be the first time the Matildas have played a professional match in Perth.

Hometown hero Sam Kerr is set to receive the bulk of the adoration from the crowd.

If she can get on the scoresheet in Perth, odds are she will unleash her trademark backflip celebration.

"It's extra special for Sam to play at home," Polkinghorne said.

"She's an exciting player. It's not a fluke she's successful come game day, because she works extremely hard.

"She's a massive part of our team."
