According to council officer Alice Kent, 75,000 bins - including small “kitchen caddies” – were being delivered to allow for the food organics system.
“If you haven’t received your bins by March 26, please contact us on 1300 292 442,” Ms Kent said.
“Please read through the information pack inside your kitchen caddy to see when to start using your new bins and the process to remove the old bins.”
Collection of the old bins will start this week and run through to April 20, but Ms Kent said people could take them to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre if they didn’t want to wait.
The changes have drawn considerable criticism in the past year, with claims council ignored community feedback.
There were also concerns that a $1 million EPA grant to help set up the “FOGO” scheme would have to be returned if a processor could not be found in time, amid concerns about green waste being dumped into landfill.
But when general manager Peter Thompson was asked if the grant would have to be handed back, he told The DA that he was confident suitable arrangements could be made and that council would build its own processing plant if necessary.
