The incident occurred during a severe dust storm at about 10.50am, when a Toyota Hilux and a semi-trailer collided in the southbound lanes of the Newell Highway at Mirrool.
A B-double then hit the rear of the ute, causing another Hilux, towing a caravan, swerved into the northbound lanes to avoid the calamity.
Two vehicles – a Mitsubishi Lancer and a Holden Colorado – also travelling south, slammed on the brakes to miss the Hilux, but they were both hit from behind when a bus could not stop in time.
As a result of the collision, the 60-year-old Colorado driver sustained serious injuries. He was airlifted to Canberra Hospital where he later died.
The 60-year-old bus driver was uninjured and was taken to West Wyalong Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
The Newell Highway was closed for several hours while Griffith police conducted their investigations.
