More than one million targets will be thrown over 11 days at this year’s National Trap Championships.
There are more than 3800 nominations for the six national events, with the 13th World Down The Line (DTL) Championships following with 750 entrants per day.
Shooters will travel from England, France, Fiji, French Polynesia, Ireland, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, South Africa, United States, Wales for the competition which runs from Saturday March 17 to Saturday March 24.
Local shooters include Ben Tredrea (junior), Rob Yeo with Janenne Kidd and Narelle Cook.
The competition is hosted in Wagga at the Australian Clay Target Association grounds off Tasman Road.
Spectators are welcome (free entry) with shooting commencing at 8.30am each day and finishing up at 5pm daily.
The World DTL opening is on Saturday March 24 at 5pm which will be highlighted by the Kapooka Ban playing each Country’s National Anthem.
Wagga produces top shots
Australia is a competitive country in the world for Clay Target Shooting having had great success on the Olympic stage.
“Why can’t it be number one in the world for all International shooting disciplines?,” Australian Clay Target Association National Executive Officer Tony Turner asks.
“We think that it should be and this epitomises our aim for the future of our association as we constantly strive for the best.”
Wagga has cemented itself as the heart of Clay Target shooting in Australia after the decision was made by the National Executive to move the National Office from its location in Melbourne to Wagga and establish the Wagga Gun Club site as a National Shooting Ground in 1977.
In 1999 the first of many National Championships were held at the National Ground and the development the National Shooting Ground has caught the imagination of executive and members.
A new conference facility is now available to host the 2018 National and World Down The Line (DTL) Championships adding further value to the Association and the Riverina region particularly the city of Wagga.
History shows the first Australian Championship under the Australian Clay Target Association (ACTA) is 74 years old dating back to 1944.
The History of the Association shows growth in the sport during this period of time has increased in terms of national events, international events including Olympic medal success.
The ACTA will present lifetime registration to two Olympic Medallists at its Hall of Fame dinner on Tuesday March 20.
Suzy Corey (Balogh) became the first female Australian shooting gold medallist in history) with Gold in the Ladies Trap event at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and Dual Olympian Deserie Baynes (nee Huddleston) won a bronze medal in women’s double trap also in 1996
This Year the Association not only hosts six National events covering all trap disciplines they will also host the 13TH ICTSF DTL championships following the National event.
The World DTL event will feature ten Countries competing for Team and Individual honours.
The event is conducted over three days with current defending World DTL Champions Matt Schiller (Cobar Club) who lives at Young and former World Champions Daryn Nichols (Broken Hill) the home team favourites.
The World and National events all feature the following categories: Open, AA, A, B, C, Ladies, Junior, Sub Junior, Veteran, Super Veteran
Founded in 1947 the Australian Clay Target Association (ACTA) is the peak shooting body for clay target shooting within Australia.
