A stolen ute chased by police through Wagga streets early Friday morning was later destroyed by fire after being dumped at Red Hill Road.

Wagga police Chief Inspector Andrew Spliet said the driver failed to stop which quickly escalated to a pursuit.

“It only went for a couple of minutes before police called off the pursuit due to the manner of driving,” he said.

Social media erupted about 4am on Friday morning, as residents woke to the sounds of screeching tyres.

Wagga police are yet to confirm any other details, with witnesses claiming the pursuit went through Lae Avenue before 4am.

Firefighters from Turvey Park Fire Station confirmed they responded to the incident after the car was reported alight about 5.10am.

Wagga police are still investigating the incident.

The driver is yet to be arrested or charged.
