About 3.20am on Wednesday morning employee Gary Singh opened the doors of the service station on Bourke Street to let a customer use the ATM.
Just minutes later two masked people in “army coloured clothing” burst through the door, demanding Mr Singh show them the safe.
“I said mate we don’t have a safe,” he said.
“The other one came in and was shouting so I said what do you want?
“If you hurt me you can’t get anything.”
Mr Singh was struck to the head with a sharp object before he was forced to empty the money from the cash register and hand over cigarettes.
Despite the trauma Mr Singh went through, he was straight back to work the next day.
“When this happens it is scary,” he said.
“If people come and steal some chips it’s different but they came and punched me and they had a knife – they were fully prepared.”
Mr Singh said his concern was for newer and female employees, who he has advised to keep the door locked.
“If people say ‘I don’t have the money can I pay tomorrow’ my manager says don’t do those things but I say I am going to,” he said.
“I’m like that and can’t help myself, I give them my trust.
“I’ve worked in Sydney and this never happened, you just can’t predict these things."
Wagga police are searching for witnesses and continue to investigate.
