One Book One Wagga alumni include award-winning Australian journalist, author, historian and screenwriter Mark Dapin, journalist and author Liam Pieper, Miles Franklin award winner Sofie Laguna and New York bestselling author Liane Moriarty.
This year’s author has been described by Boyd Tonkin from the Independent as “...a dazzlingly accomplished author who commands all the strokes. Her repertoire stretches from a hallucinatory sense of place to a mastery of suspense, sophisticated verbal artistry and a formidable skill in navigating those twisty paths where history and psychology entwine”.
Michelle de Kretser was born in Sri Lanka and emigrated to Australia when she was 14. She was educated in Melbourne and Paris, and has worked as a university tutor, an editor and a book reviewer. In 2013 Michelle won the Miles Franklin Award for her novel Questions of Travel, which also won he Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Fiction and the Western Australian Premier's Award for Fiction.
Her novel The Life to Come is set in Sydney, Paris and Sri Lanka, and is a mesmerising chronicle of the stories we tell and don't tell ourselves as individuals, as societies and as nations.
Driven by a riveting narrative and unforgettable characters, The Life to Come is a dazzling meditation on intimacy, loneliness and our flawed perception of other people.
Pippa is a writer who longs for success. Celeste tries to convince herself that her feelings for her married lover are reciprocated. Ash makes strategic use of his childhood in Sri Lanka but blots out the memory of a tragedy from that time.
Profoundly moving as well as wickedly funny, The Life to Come reveals how the shadows cast by both the past and the future can transform, distort and undo the present. This extraordinary novel will strike to your soul.
Copies of The Life to Come are available for loan now from the library.
The One Book One Wagga gala dinner with author Michelle de Kretser will be held on Friday, May 18 at the Mirage Room, RSL Club. Bookings can be made through the Commercial Club website or on 6921 3012.
