Dr Mary Ross from the Trail Street Medical Centre said kindergarten is a critical time for detecting and addressing any development issues in children.
“The 4-year-old check is where children are screened for their physical and general wellbeing to set them up for a healthy start for school,” Dr Ross said.
“The things that are measured are height, weight, hearing, and vision, and it can be done by general practitioners and their nursing staff.
“That allows early identification of health risk factors, particularly in developmental delay, and early identification means early treatment and early investigation, so things are already in play going back to school.”
