As the founder of Dads Care 4 Kids, a support group for single fathers across the region, Mr Makeham is fighting to break down the stigma.
Having become a single father after separating from his partner in 1999, Mr Makeham was the rock for his young daughters, banding together and taking on whatever life would throw at them.
While Mr Makeham said the journey wasn’t without its obstacles, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“It was quite challenging not being able to help my daughters as teenagers with personal issues,” he said.
“There wasn’t many people I had around to ask for help and the closest people were in Leeton.
“I wouldn’t change a thing, we’ve had our ups and downs but boy I am always proud of what they’re doing.”
Mr Makeham’s children have now grown up, aged 19 and 22.
Having started the support group about three years ago, there are now about 40 Wagga members and 100 across the state.
Mr Makeham said it was important for men to have someone to talk to, given the tendency to bottle things up.
“There needs to be more support services around so dads can realise they’re not alone,” he said.
“Men are always told to toughen up and blokes always think oh I can do it on my own.
“So often men say they wish they had contacted us months earlier once they get in touch.”
Now Mr Makeham has been chosen to speak at a Canberra rally, advocating for change in the family law courts.
“I plan to tell people not to give up hope and that children are worth fighting for,” Mr Makeham said.
“We are big believers that children should spend time with both parents unless the specific situation doesn’t allow for it.”
Mr Makeham believes there should be compulsory counselling before family law court mediation.
“I suppose people don’t realise dads can care for and raise kids just as well as anyone else,” he said.
The Family Law Rally will be held in Canberra on March 4.
