Pedal power has been raising thousands of dollars for the Tumut hospital over the past two year with hundreds of cyclists flocking to Tumut for the annual event.
The idea behind the Tumut Cycle Classic was realised on the back of a bike.
President and co-founder of the Tumut Cycle Classic Dr Tarek Sari was riding around Tumut with some friends on Christmas when they thought they should utilise the beautiful scenery and quiet roads for a cause.
“We were going through town and around the roads looking at the beautiful scenery and we just thought we could make something out of this,” he said.
Together with the help of Dr Osman Darwich the Tumut Cycle Classic was born.
The first year (2015) they raised $3,000 for the hospital which went towards an oxygen saturation machine.
Last year this figure jumped to $20,000 which was used to purchase eight mobility beds. This year it is hoped they will be able to buy an endoscopy telepack.
“We’re thinking what the heck, let’s double it this year and let’s get $40,000,” Dr Sari said.
It is expected more than 250 cyclists will inundate Tumut for the event after 200 took to the roads last year.

Dr Sari works between Tumut and Sydney and knows all too well how enjoyable it is to ride around Tumut compared to the city.
“We get a mixture of country folk and city slickers coming together to ride,” Dr Sari said.
“Cylists love continuity, there are no traffic lights you have to stop at.
“People from Sydney are very responsive to the event, I’d say just under half are from Sydney.”
The ride will be held on Sunday January 21 starting at 6.30am and finishing up around midday due to the expected heat.
