Reinsman Peter Hedges believes perfect manners help Petes Big Jim to an impressive win in the first MIA Breeders Plate heat on Friday night.
Leading from barrier six, the son of Big Jim stormed out from behind the mobile and was never headed in the first two-year-old race of the season.
Pete’s Big Jim ($3.20) went on to defeat Col Thomas’s Metal Rock ($2.6m) by 24.2 metres clocking a mile rate of 2:01.9.
It made the trip from Cessnock more than worthwhile for trainer Stacie Elliott.
Hedges thought the gelding impeccable manners were key to the victory.
“He is so safe and that is why we decided to come for this race,” Hedges said.
The second heat was a much closer affair with Stephen Maguire’s Major Roll ($6) upsetting $1.40 favourite to win by 2.7 metres.
Sitting off the speed, he finished strongly in a quicker mile rate of 2:00.6
